Activity 2 - Irregular Verbs
In German, as in English, there are a group of verbs that are irregular. We have already seen a few, such as essen from the previous lesson. These verbs will contain a vowel change in the du and er, sie, es forms. Modal verbs are different and will have a vowel change throughout the singular, however, most irregular verbs just have a vowel change in the 2nd and 3rd person singular. The endings for these verbs is the exact same as we have already learned.
The verbs can be divided into groups based on how the vowel will change. You will begin to see certain patterns with the vowel changes over time and will be able to recognize irregular verbs ahead of time. One great resource to help you is Verbix. Through verbix, you can type in any verb and all forms will appear. This is especially helpful with those irregular verbs.
The list of verbs we will be working with is below. Each Friday, Katja features an irregular verb of the week. Review her videos to further help with verb conjugation.
a to ä e to i e to ie
fahren - fährt essen - isst lesen - liest
gefallen - gefällt geben - gibt sehen - sieht
tragen - trägt nehmen - nimmt
sprechen - spricht
Click on the Google Doc that contains the conjugation for all of these verbs. Print off the page for your notes, as it is important to be able to reference this page frequently.

Lesson 8 - Summary
In this lesson, we learned about clothing and fashion. We learned our colors and how to describe what someone is wearing. We took the learning away from the classroom and explored our communities by looking at current fashion trends. With this project, we created fascinating presentations about what people are wearing. In grammar, we covered more irregular verbs. Like the modal verbs, irregular verbs contain a vowel change in both the du and er, sie, es forms. Remember to go over the important conjugation charts and to print this off. Practice the conjugation games, so that you are ready for work in class as well. Next lesson is the final lesson for this class. We will move to learning about the home and we will create our dream homes. Es ist schön um zu Hause zu sein!
