A Stammtisch is a standing table, often reserved for regulars to enjoy their favorite treats. Review the words below and try out the crossword activity before taking your quiz.

Activity 2 - Nicht und Kein
In German, we have already been exposed to one form of negation - nicht. Nicht translates to not and it is used with verbs, adverbs, and adjectives. We have already used nicht with gern to say nicht gern or "don´t like". Germans use the word kein with nouns and it is declined just like the forms of der, die, das, and ein. Unlike in English, Germans negate nouns with more frequency than English speakers. Kein translates to the word no, but it is only used in front of nouns. For instance, I have no money in German is: Ich habe kein Geld. Kein is declined as follows:
Masculine Feminine Neuter Plural
Nominative kein keine kein keine
(subject)
Accusative keinen keine kein keine
(direct object)
As you can see, the only form of kein to change when it is used as a direct object is the masculine. All the other forms stay the same. The feminine and plural forms are identical. Please make sure you copy the chart down into your notes, so you can reference this whenever you need it.
Remember kein is used before a noun, while nicht is used with adjective, adverbs, and verbs. Look at the examples below.
Ich trinke keine Cola. - I drink no cola.
Trinkst du kein Wasser? - Do you not drink water?
Er hat keinen Hund. - He has no dog.
Wir haben keine Idee. - We have no idea.
Ich habe nicht viel Zeit. - I do not have much time.
Wir fahren nicht schnell. - We drive not quickly.
Er spielt nicht Basketball. - He does not play basketball.
Die Lehrerin ist nicht nett. - The teacher is not nice.

Activity 3 - Group Project
You will be working with a group of your choice to create a Restaurant Rollenspiel. A Rollenspiel is a skit or role-play. In class, we will divide into groups of four. Your group will be working together to create a script for the Restaurant Rollenspiel. Each of you will pick a role, prior to creating the skit. You will create a script as a group that centers on eating at a restaurant. Each person will take a specific role and will work with their group to create the script, the setting and background information, and any necessary props. Once the script is finished, your group will submit it to the teacher to have it reviewed. Once the script has been reviewed, your group will need to decide how they will perform the Rollenspiel. Each group has 2 options. You can either record the Rollenspiel outside of class and upload the video to YouTube or you can perform it during class. Each group must come to a consensus on how the final product will be performed. Below are the requirements for the individual roles and Rollenspiel. Please review the rubric prior to submitting the rough draft, so you ensure that all requirements have been met.
Individual Roles

You are to lead the group, settle disputes, and record what each individual has contributed to the group project. Editor - You are to review the Google Doc prior to the group leader submitting. Review what every group member has submitted and correct any grammatical mistakes. When I return the Google Doc with correction suggestions, you are responsible for making these changes. Director - You need to help your group decide on the acting portion of the Rollenspiel. You are to help everyone with their lines and pronunciation. You need to help group members make the Rollenspiel believable and entertaining. Designer - You need to create and design the props that will be used in the Rollenspiel. Props will include menus and food items. You will need to create the setting for the role-play, so that it is believable and entertaining. |

Summary - Lesson 7 das Essen
During this lesson, we learned valuable food vocabulary. Now you know how to order your favorite sweet treats in German. We also learned how to negate sentences. Remember that kein is used with nouns and will be declined just as the word ein. It is important to remember that the masculine form of kein is the only form that changes depending on its function within a sentence. It will change from kein to keinen. For example: Kein Mann ist hier. and Ich kenne keinen Mann. Nicht, on the other hand, is used with adjectives, adverbs, and verbs. Nicht is used like our word not.
This has been an exciting lesson full of fun new assignments. I hope everyone has enjoyed the Rollenspiel. It is one of my favorite activities every year. Next chapter deals with more irregular verbs and fashion. We will learn about famous Germans who lead the fashion industry like Karl Lagerfeld and Heidi Klum. Lass die Modenschau beginnen!
