Lesson 3 - Aktivitäten
For this lesson, we are moving further into the personal sphere and will discuss activities. Now you will be able to express your opinion in German by using the adverb gern! We will further our German instruction by learning how to conjugate verbs, tell time beyond the hour, half, and quarter, and finally look at adding variety to our sentences. Variety in sentence structure helps to add flavor and color to your writing. Instead of keeping with a boring subject verb structure, we can now add phrases at the beginning of sentences to pump them up and making your writing more enjoyable.
Objectives
1. Students will conjugate verbs in a sentence based on a variety of subjects.
2. Students will create sentences using correct verb conjugation.
3. Students will create sentences using time phrases that include five minute intervals and will be able to distinguish between formal and informal time phrases.
4. Students will alter the word order of sentences using time phrases in order to add variety and fluency to paragraph writing.
5. Students will express their preference for certain activities using the adverbs gern and nicht gern.

Activity 1 - Konjukation
Konjugation or conjugation is something we do not do very often in English. Basically, your English teachers will refer to this as "subject verb agreement" and it is why we add an "s" to the third person singular. We do not say "he play", we say "he plays". This is something all languages do, so do not think of it as something difficult about German. There are some basic steps to learn and once you see it, it will become easier to do. Just remember, this happens every time you write a sentence.
Already we have been using basic conjugation, I just haven´t explained it yet. When I asked, "wo wohnst du?" You would reply "Ich wohne in Missouri". Look at the different endings of the verb - wohnen. For du, we add "st" to the end of the verb, while ich adds an "e". This tells the reader and listener, what the subject of the sentence is. In other words, the verb has a specific ending dependent on what the subject actually is.
To conjugate a verb, you must first remove the "en" ending from the infinitive. An infinitive is a verb in its "pure" form, untouched by a subject. All verbs, every single last one, will ALWAYS end in an "n". It is rare that verbs end in just an "n", most end in an "en". Next, you must match the subject with the correct verb ending.
These verb endings match with specific subjects. We learned the pronouns in class, but let´s review them here.
ich - I wir - we
du - you (one person, informal) ihr - you (plural, informal)
er - he sie (pl) - they
sie (sg) - she Sie - you (singular and plural, formal)
es - it
If you have a person´s name listed, like Hans, you would use the er, sie, es form of the verb to conjugate it. Think of it this way, Hans plays football is the same as he plays football. This is why you use this form of the verb when conjugating. If you said Hans and Franz play football, it is the same as they play football. So you would use the sie, Sie form of the verb when conjugating.
Hans spielt Football. Er spielt Football.
Hans und Franz spielen Football. Sie spielen Football.
All the other verb forms go with each respective pronoun. In other words, the ONLY time a verb will end in e, is when ich is the subject. ST only ends a verb when du is the subject.
Practice conjugating the following verbs for the subjects provided. The answers will be below. Also check out Katja´s video for more information.
ich ________ (denken)
wir ________ (tanzen)
du ________ (spielen)
ihr ________ (machen)
sie (sg) _______ (schwimmen)
er _______ (hören)

Activity 2 - die Uhrzeit
There are two ways to tell time in German, the formal and informal. The formal time is more than just using the 24 hour clock and starts with what we learned last chapter. It uses the same phrases as before with nach and vor. We will stick with increments of five for ease of use. Remember that nach means after and that vor means before. Just like with the quarter of an hour, any time 5 to 20 after, you will use nach. Any time from 40 on will use the word vor and will add 1 hour. This is really important to remember, you will have to add an hour when you use the word vor, because it is x amount of time before the next hour. If you noticed I skipped 25 and 35. This is because these times are a little bit different. When you are looking at 25 after, in German they say instead that it is 5 minutes before the half hour. So the phrase you use is: Es ist fünf vor halb (next hour). With 35, you say that it is 5 minutes past the half hour. So the phrase you us is: Es ist fünf nach halb (next hour). Below I list the times from 1.05 to 1.55, showing every five minute increment. Please use this as a guide for telling time.
Formal Time
1.05 - Es ist fünf nach ein Uhr.
1.10 - Es ist zehn nach ein Uhr.
1.15 - Es ist Viertel nach ein Uhr.
1.20 - Es ist zwanzig nach ein Uhr.
1.25 - Es ist fünf vor halb zwei.
1.30 - Es ist halb zwei.
1.35 - Es ist fünf nach halb zwei.
1.40 - Es ist zwanzig vor zwei.
1.45 - Es ist Viertel vor zwei.
1.50 - Es ist zehn vor zwei.
1.55 - Es ist fünf vor zwei.
Informal time is actually much simpler. You will say the hour, followed by the word Uhr, and then the minutes. Uhr functions as the word o´clock in English. Below are examples of Informal Time.
Informal Time
1.05 - Es ist ein Uhr fünf.
1.10 - Es ist ein Uhr zehn.
1.15 - Es ist ein Uhr fünfzehn.
1.20 - Es ist ein Uhr zwanzig.
1.25 - Es ist ein Uhr fünfundzwanzig.
1.30 - Es ist ein Uhr dreißig.
1.35 - Es ist ein Uhr fünfunddreißig,
1.40 - Es ist ein Uhr vierzig.
1.45 - Es ist ein Uhr fünfundvierzig.
1.50 - Es ist ein Uhr fünfzig.
1.55 - Es ist ein Uhr fünfundfünfzig.
Below is the video from the last lesson. It is a good idea to review this video, as it explains the informal time as well as the formal.

Activity 3 - Word Order
In German, the word order of sentences follow a very specific pattern. Unlike in English, where the subject is always the focus of the sentence, the verb is the most important sentence element. Regardless of how the sentence in German begins, the conjugated verb must ALWAYS be in second position. So far all of our sentences start with a subject. Now, you are going to learn ways to vary the word order, but keep in mind that all important rule - the verb must be in 2nd position!
Sentences can begin with a time phrase or a subject. If a time phrase begins a sentence, the verb must go second followed by the subject. If a subject begins a sentence, the verb must go second followed by a time phrase. Since we are really only dealing with subjects, verbs, and time phrases, these are the combinations that we will be discussing currently.
Remember the following to help with word order:
S V TP - Subject Verb Time Phrase
TP V S - Time Phrase Verb Subject
In order to change the word order, it is best to identify the subject, verb, and time phrase. Once you identify these items, it makes it much easier to practice changing the word order. See the process below:
Ich spiele am Wochenede Tischtennis.
Subject: ich Verb: spiele Time Phrase: am Wochenende
To change word order:
Am Wochenende spiele ich Tischtennis.
Um drei Uhr tanzen wir in der Disko.
Subject: wir Verb: tanzen Time Phrase: um drei Uhr
To change word order:
Wir tanzen um drei Uhr in der Disko.
In the video, Katja goes into a very deep explanation of word order. Really only focus on minutes 5 through 7, as this section covers more of what we are learning.

Activity 4 - Was machst du gern?
This chapter centers on the theme: Was machst du gern? or what do you like to do? You will learn to express your preference for various activities, using the adverb gern. Since it is an adverb, you must use a verb when writing a sentence, otherwise, it is not a sentence. It is very important to understand that gern is not a verb and does not function in a sentence the same way the word "like" does in English. Below are some vocabulary words, centering on activities. Then there are examples of how you use gern and nicht gern to express preference for these activities.
Verbs
fahren - to ride hören - to listen lesen - to read machen - to make or do schwimmen - to swim singen - to sing spielen - to play tanzen - to dance wandern - to hike Adverbs gern - like nicht gern - not like |
Nouns
das Buch - book das Computerspiel - computer game Fußball - soccer Football - American football die Hausaufgabe - homework Rockmusik - rock music das Rad - bicycle Tischtennis - table tennis das Videospiel - video game *Please note that the majority of games are the same in English and German. For example: Ich spiele gern Basketball. I like to play basketball. |
Was machst du gern? - What do you like to do?
Possible answers: Ich schwimme gern. Ich tanze gern. Ich spiele gern Fußball. |
Was machst du nicht gern? - What do you not like to do?
Possible answers: Ich spiele nicht gern Tennis. Ich fahre nicht gern Rad. Ich wandere nicht gern. |
Activity 4 Assignment - Was machst du gern? Was machst du nicht gern?
For this assignment, you are to create a presentation answering the questions: Was machst du gern? and Was machst du nicht gern?. You need to create 3 sentences about what activities you enjoy and 2 sentences about what activities you do not enjoy. Include a picture with each sentence, illustrating it. When you are finished, you will submit the presentation to me via the Assignment Form or share via Google Docs or Slides. You may chose to do your presentation on Google Slides, a Prezi, or some other presentation format that you choose. Do not forget to label your assignment and put your name on it before submitting. We will present these creations in class on Tuesday, October 25. To help guide you in while making the project, use the Was machst du gern? Rubric. This is how you will be graded on the project. To the right are screen shots and a PDF version of my project. Use it as a guide to help you create your own project. The program I used is Comic Life. It has a free trial, but is a paid program. |
